The EZ BSF Larva Lab is for growing and harvesting black soldier fly larvae.

  • It easy to set up and use for ongoing success.

  • This bin was made mostly for outdoor/greenhouse use and best results are in temperatures between 70-90 degrees daytime, 50+ nighttime.

  • Adding in larvae when you start your bin is always recommended to avoid mold and other critters from corrupting your system. Flies will avoid laying eggs where there are potential predators.

If you want to get a fast start on your new larvae lab, here are some suggestions:

  • If you know there are black soldier flies (BSF) in your area, start your bin with 5000-10000 small BSFL.

  • If you are not sure if there are BSF in your area, 5000-10000 small bsfl and 500-1000 Pupa.

How to start your bin

  • Assemble bin as instructed

  • Add 1” of bedding. Not required, but can help with drainage (rice hulls are recommended since they have low mold potential and drain well)

  • Add food waste to the bin and add larvae to the bin at the same time.

  • If you also ordered pupa add them to one of the catch bins along with two cups of soil. The pupa will burrow into the soil and the soil will help them shed the coccoon when they hatch.

  • The flies leave, mate and will be attracted to the scent of the food and the larvae working in the bin.

Self harvest features

  • The crawl out/harvest ramps are angled at 30 degrees, making it easy for the pre-pupae larvae to crawl out/self harvest.

  • There is a chute at the top of the ramp with a 3/4 gallon catch bin for the pupae to fall into.

  • The catch bin is easily removable to harvest larvae or you can leave the larvae in the catch bin to hatch into flies. There are holes on the side of the catch trays to allow flies to escape and mate.

What completes the system

  • There are two access holes on each side of the bin for the flies to reenter to lay their eggs in the crevases inside the bin.

  • For more egg laying potential, make a small bundle of cut corrigated cardboard, band it together with a rubber band, bend a large paperclip into an “s”, connect the cardboard to one end and hook on to the bin at one of the fly reentry holes.

  • At the bottom of the bin there is a drain setup to drain the compost leache if needed.

  • Slide out lids for easy feeding and moisture control.

  • This system can hold over 100,000 small or 30,000 large larvae.

  • Once the bin is established with the best weather temperature (warm to hot) the flies can naturally continue refilling the bin with larvae.

  • This is a compost system specifically made for the black soldier fly larvae. It has a 10.5 gallon capacity, 7 gallons of compost area and 3.5 gallons of area for the soldier flies to fly back into the bin to lay more eggs.

  • It is made from 100% recycled plastic.
